University of California Merced Continues Green Efforts

The University of California Merced has improved its sustainability rating through the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS), after a long and rigorous review process, according to University of California Merced.

Silver Spring Library Achieves LEED Gold

The Silver Spring Library, located in Montgomery County, Md., was awarded LEED Gold certification thanks to the many energy-saving elements incorporated into its design.

In 2015, the green building industry expanded drastically as companies continued to find cost savings and energy efficiency by building sustainable facilities. Architects and owners used innovative design features to achieve LEED certification and create a better environment for employees. Green Building News anticipates even more sustainable construction growth, and has compiled a diverse list of projects to watch in 2016.

Markham Stouffville Hospital Receives LEED Silver Certification

The Markham Stouffville Hospital has received LEED Silver certification on its new 385,000-square-foot expansion. The original building, Building A, which was opened in March 1990 also received upgrades such as new floors, windows and paint. The existing patient rooms were equipped with hand washing stations as well as new private bathrooms and medical charting technology closer to the beds.

Denver Skyline Adds New LEED Office Tower

The Connecticut-based private investment firm Starwood Capital Group plans to develop a new office building in the Union Station neighborhood of Downtown Denver, called 16 Chestnut. The company is working through a controlled affiliate and East West Partners, a Denver-based development company specializing in, building, selling, managing and supporting high quality real estate to complete a third collaboration project in the Downtown Denver area.

Drew University Adds New LEED Student Center

The newly redesigned Ehinger Center located on the Drew University campus in Madison received LEED certification earlier this month.

One World Observation Deck Debuts Atop Freedom Tower

The One World Observatory atop New York’s Freedom Tower opened earlier this year on May 29.

University of Colorado Earns Eighteenth LEED Certification on Campus

The University of Colorado announced August 24 that newly renovated residence hall, Baker Hall, has received LEED Platinum certification, making it one of 18 buildings on the University of Colorado campus that have been LEED-certified. The 15-month renovation was finished in August 2014.

Efficient Wisconsin Clinic Earns LEED

The UW Health Yahara Clinic in Monona lives and breathes efficiency. Not only does the staff follow a lean approach to processing patients — taking as little steps as possible to give them proper health care — the building was just awarded LEED certification this month, after meeting several conservation goals, such as reducing its potable water use by 37 percent and cutting annual energy costs by 14.7 percent.
