After six years of planning, fundraising and construction, students at Public School 41 (P.S. 41) in Greenwich Village returned for the 2012 term to find a brand new 15,000-square-foot Green Roof Environmental Literacy Laboratory on top of their school.

Chicago has become a hot bed for the green roof industry, leading the nation in overall coverage, with over 2.5 million square feet of garden space located on top of its buildings. In addition to winning the total volume award, the “Windy City” is known for boasting what Engineering News-Record has named the single largest green rooftop in the world, in its beautiful Millennium Park.

Berrien Springs, Mich.-based Eco-Roofs recently installed the first green roof atop the four-story College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Building at Butler University. The installation took place in March with the assistance of Pat Maloney, a green roof professional at Eco-Roofs, as well as a crew of 15 volunteers that included Butler students.

A new campus for St. Louis Community College will feature an $18 million building that designers hope will receive LEED gold certification, thanks to several green design features, including a green rooftop designed with drought-tolerant plants.
