Suppliers: Big Ass Fans

During a recent renovation of the 236,000-square-foot Lied Recreation Athletic Center at Iowa State University, the project team installed 22 large-diameter fans to improve comfort and ventilation.

The fans introduced air movement into the facility to supplement the natural ventilation that already existed. Due to the excess costs — initial cost estimates for air conditioning were $3.2 million — administrators decided to forego the installation of a comprehensive HVAC system.
The commercial-grade fans from Big Ass Fans silently circulate air throughout the facility. They are integrated into the building’s automation system, significantly reducing the need for ductwork, and on-board controls prevent electrical interference with public address systems, computers and scoreboards.
In addition to comfort and temperature control, the steady airflow improves overall environmental quality within facilities allowing for constant, even temperatures that combat localized humidity issues and mold growth.
“We bring in 100 percent outside air in the summer and provide air movement to allow people to exercise safely,” says Chuck Heldenbrand, of Henneman Engineering, a consultant for ISU.

In addition to providing cool air in summer months, the fans help the facility generate energy savings during the winter months by circulating heat trapped at the ceiling down to the occupant level.
